What to Expect in a Swimming Competition

For non-swimmers who haven't been to a local swimming competition here are some things you can expect to see or do if you are about to watch or compete.

1.  Parking space is usually packed.
2.  Spectators' area is filled to capacity.
3.  Swimmers warm up for approximately 40 minutes.
4.  Introduction includes prayer, national anthem and welcome remarks.
5.  Events are posted so that swimmers know their 'heat number'.
6.  Swimmers are advised to go to the 'Ready Bench' if their heat number is near.
7.  'Time slips' are given to swimmers.
8.  Proceed to the pool officials with 'time slips' if 'heat number' is being called.
9.  Follow the instructions / whistle blows.
10. Dive, swim, finish.
11. Repeat from number five to ten for the next heat.
12. Wait for the awarding.
13. Swimming competition is almost always a 'waiting game' of sorts so bring something that will help to pass the time like magazines, books, camera, iPad and food.

Bike Ride to Kwebang Lampas

50 k ride plus 3 k hike

We planned to ride our bikes to a local spot called Kwebang Lampas and see for ourselves why it got its moniker.  With few hit and miss instructions we got lost 'kami ang nakalampas'.  For almost 3 km we carried our bikes through mud along the wrong route, for every step I take and for every sweat I drop the more I wish my bike is made of light carbon.  After hiking with my bike on my shoulder I just felt really tired and decided to just come back the following week to get to our intended destination.  This is another one of those - 'charge it to experience moments' luckily we had fun.

Why I Don't Wear a Trisuit... yet

No trisuit for me just yet

The advantages of wearing a trisuit are hard to ignore.  They can make for a fast transition, the fit makes you aerodynamic, the extra cloth may prevent jelly stings, the suit is a good sponsor's advert, and as a team uniform it's a must have.

But still I don't have a trisuit and here are the trivial reasons why

1.  The look: while trisuits look good even awesome on most triathletes I just don't think that it will translate to my physique 'coz I'm so thin my daughter calls me a stickman when riding my bike.
2.  I like to swim without a top.  It's just me and the 3 percent who swim with our good old speedo trunks..
3.  I am not vying for a podium so transition time is not that important to me.
4.  I don't have a club or sponsor.  Yes, the banners you see here aren't paying me. I just use them.
5.  I haven't been stung by a jellyfish... yet.
6.  I love my muscle shirt :-)

My advice:  buy a trisuit, it's nice to have, it's just not my thing yet.
